Our Curriculum

At Cheeky Monkey’s Day Nursery, we follow the guidelines of the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, a Government framework which focuses on the learning and development of the children from ages birth to the five.

As part of the EYFS goals, we must ensure that all children:

  • Make good progress and learn well
  • Are kept healthy and safe
  • Are “school ready” by the time they reach the age of five
  • Have a broad range of knowledge and skills
  • Have a learning and development programme drawn up that is appropriate to their own stage of development.

In addition, we must demonstrate:

  • A strong partnership with parents and carers
  • Robust safeguarding practices
  • Equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice.

The EYFS is built around four principles:

  • Unique Child
  • Positive Relationships
  • Enabling Environments
  • Learning and Development

The Framework itself consists of the following 7 areas of learning, development and care, these are split into 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas:

Prime Area:
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development:
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

Specific Area:
  • Literacy
  • Maths
  • Understanding of the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This area of their development to support children in developing a positive sense of themselves and others. To form positive relationships, social skills and to learn to manage their feelings. It is to support them in having the confidence and understanding the appropriate behaviour whilst in groups.

Communication and Language:

The nursery gives children opportunities to experience a rich language environment in their play; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves and encouragement in listening and speaking in a range of situations.

Physical Development:

We support children in becoming active and developing coordination, control and movement. We help children in understanding the importance of physical exercise and making healthy food choices.

Literacy:

The area of the children’s development involves them in understanding how to link sounds and letter and to begin to read and write. The children should be able to read a wide range of reading resources to show their interests.

Mathematics:

The children are given many opportunities through play to develop and improve their counting skills, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple additions and subtraction problems through play and confidently show an understanding in shapes, space and measures.

Understanding of the world:

This area of a child’s development helps them make sense of their physical world and community through opportunities to observe and find out about people, places, technology and their environment.

Expressive Arts and Design:

Children to explore and engage in a wide range of media and materials. To express themselves through thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology.

The practitioners at Cheeky Monkey’s Day Nursery will plan activities with a balance of adult-guided and child initiated activities. No matter how old the child is, we ensure that every child goes home each day having had a fun stimulated day and comes in the morning thriving for more fun learning.

Each child will have a learning journey which is a track of their learning and progress of their development. We encourage parents to meet with their child’s key person to review their children’s progress and share next steps together.
